Amputation
The Whittier Prosthetic Clinic provides a multi-disciplinary approach to the care of individuals with amputations. The focus is on the progress of the patient, as well as adjustments and challenges in daily living as a result of amputation or loss of a limb.
Program Objectives
- To facilitate and support the individual through the adjustment of his or her loss, discomfort and disability.
- To assist in returning the patient to an independent level of function following amputation.
- To improve comfort in the patient’s self-image and functional level.
- To motivate and increase the patient’s desire to participate in the Amputee Rehabilitation Program.
Program Components
The three phases that make up the components of prosthetic clinic are:
- Pre-prosthesis: 1st stage in forming and shaping the stump.
- Temporary Prosthesis: assessment done with patient to see what type of prosthesis, knee and/or ankle/foot joint best suits the patient’s needs physically and emotionally.
- Permanent Dress Prosthesis.
Other areas addressed are:
- Skin and Wound Management: assessment of both residual limb and remaining foot and leg
- Patient and family support and education
- Progressive exercise program
- Community re-entry, Vocational and Avocational programs if appropriate
- Outpatient Therapies if needed
- Follow-up plan upon discharge
- Pain Control due to phantom limb sensation
Pre-Admission Process
- Age 16 or older
- Referrals may come from the individual’s primary care physician
- Nursing home residents need referral from house physician
- Referrals from the community will be evaluated by our staff physiatrist
