The family of Elizabeth (Betty) B. would like to thank you for the abundant kindness, care and concern you provided our dear Mom while she was at Whittier. Your jobs and the services you provide are challenging. Not everyone is cut out for that line of work, but we would like to commend you and your organization for putting together a staff to be proud of. While we were blessed to have received excellent care from the staff at Whittier, we would like to give special thanks for the sincere kindness showed to our Mom, Betty, and to our family by Liz and her co-workers. These ladies and men are a true credit to the nursing profession and we wish them the best in all of their future endeavors.

Whittier Place artist honored in 2015 annual calendar

The artwork of Kathleen Veit, resident at Whittier Place in Ghent NY, was selected from the more than 300 submissions in the “Art from the Heart” juried art contest run by the New York State Health Facilities Association (NYSHFA) and the New York State Center for Assisted Living (NYSCAL).

Creating art is a brand new experience for Kathleen Veit, who moved to Whittier Place a little over a year ago.  Kathleen says she enjoys creating art because she gets to show what she is feeling in her heart, and enjoys the beauty she can create on canvas.  When asked to share her inspiration for her piece, “Romance,” she said, “I like that particular time of day and I was thinking of a beautiful sunset in my mind.” She added, “I love to be busy and help others all that I can. I love to socialize and be creative in a lot of ways. Laughter is always the best medicine for me and I love surrounding myself with beautiful things.

The contest was launched in 2004.  Visions from the hearts and minds of artists are translated into entries into the juried art contest, which selects the artwork of thirteen contest finalists to be featured in the annual calendar.  Over 70 pieces of artwork were submitted from across New York state.  The judges included representatives from the New York State Museum and the Sorelle Gallery in Albany. Ranging in age from 51 to 99, the different backgrounds of the artists creates a unique blend of artistic styles.

The 2015 “Art from the Heart” calendar can be purchased for $12 by visiting http://www.thefqc.org/faces-stories/artwork/ and www.nyshfa.org  Proceeds from the calendar benefit the Foundation for Quality Care, Inc. a non-profit, grant-supported organization that focuses on improving the quality of care and quality of life in New York State nursing homes.
