Sippican Welcomes UMass Nursing Students

At Sippican Healthcare Center the arrival of spring means the arrival of University of Massachusetts Nursing Students. Two groups of students are assigned to the Windsor Unit which is composed of sub-acute patients. This unit is geared for recuperation from orthopedic and general surgery, stroke, cardiac events as well as respiratory issues such as pneumonia and COPD. Assignment to this unit is the first clinical experience for many of these sophomore nursing students. They provide basic nursing care, administer treatments as well as medications under the supervision of the UMass Nursing Instructor.

Garden Therapy with the Marion Garden Discussion Group

Members of The Marion Garden Discussion Group have been brightening residents' lives ever since Sippican first opened its doors. Visiting every month, they help Sippican's residents to create floral arrangements they they can keep and bring back to their rooms. Seasonal fresh flowers are used, especially around the holiday seasons. Club members help residents to select, buy, cut, and clip flowers and fillers for their arrangements, and the cost is supported entirely by the Marion Garden Club. The Garden Discussion Group is very popular with Sippican residents as well as other nursing homes in the area that Garden Club members also visit.

Here is what some of the Garden Club Members say:
“We feel this is a great opportunity to give a little back to our community using the thing we all love—plants and flowers.”
“Your residents will have their own garden at their fingertips.”
