Comfort & Joy
Whittier Staff present handmade gifts to Alzheimer's Patients

The idea came to Cathy Simonian, the Pharmacy Manager at Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital in Westborough, to include Whittier in a service program for the community in January. She thought it would be nice to include people from different backgrounds in a project that could help some hospice patients.  It evolved into "Comfort & Joy."

The "Comfort" part involved numerous people, employees and friends of Whittier and Church of the Nativity Prayer Shawl group in Northboro, who knitted and crocheted shawls and afghans.

“We received shawls from as far away as San Francisco.   We had Joanne Brosnan, of Shrewsbury, and Ethel Temple a receptionist at Whittier knit numerous shawls and afghans,” said Cathy.

The "Joy" part was in the form of artwork provided by students at Shrewsbury High School and Spring Street School in Shrewsbury as well as Benny Rocadas RN, of Whittier and Ed Radock of  Natick, Cathy’s Dad.

The afghans will be given away in bags made by the students at Cornerstone Christian Academy in Franklin.

Cathy’s project was something all ages enjoyed taking part in: “This really turned out to be an intergenerational project.  Everyone wanted to become involved once they heard about it.”

Each shawl/afghan will be accompanied by a piece of artwork and will be given to an Alzheimer patient through Beacon Hospice of Framingham. Lyn Keithline of Beacon Hospice will be accepting the donation.

Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital
helps Cycle for Haylee raise over $61,000
On Saturday, October 1, 2005 Cycle for Haylee held its 8th Annual Bicycle Tour to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. It was a banner year, with the total amounting to $10K more than was raised last year. Over 230 riders showed up (a 28% increase over last year), including Dr. Greg Malloy and Dr. Michael Sefton from Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital (pictured below). The Cycle for Haylee Bicycle Tour is a fundraising bicycle ride through the scenic backroads of Holliston and surrounding towns to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The ride is named for Haylee Louise Reed, a courageous little girl born in August of 1997 with cystic fibrosis (CF). The proceeds of the ride support the efforts of talented researchers, who are racing toward a cure for CF, and who will assure that Haylee, her little sister Jenna (who is also battling CF), and other children like them lead long and happy lives. For more information about this event, go to www.cycleforhaylee.org
