Background
Traumatic Brain Injury Program(TBI)

The Whittier Traumatic Brain Injury Program is well structured and comprehensive,
providing inpatient and outpatient services to persons with traumatic and non traumatic brain injury.

Program Objectives
The program is designed to enable persons with brain injury to attain the highest possible level of independence by providing excellent inter-disciplinary rehabilitation team services, education, research, family and community involvement.

Program Components
The brain injury program at Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital is as unique as the patients it assists. An individualized treatment program addresses “whole life outcomes” by providing services such as acute coma stimulation, medical care, cognitive rehabilitation, training and education in functional living, community re-integration, recreation and vocational needs. Emotional support and counseling for the patient and family is also provided. Specific specialists include:

• Physiatrists (Rehabilitation Physicians)

• Rehabilitation Nurses

• Speech and Language Pathologists

• Vocational Counselors

Admission Criteria
• Age 16 or older
• The patients will be medically stable with or without ventilator support.
• The patient will have cognitive, behavioral and/or physical dysfunction
• Los Ranchos Amigos scale, Level I or above

Pre-Admission Process
A referral to Whittier can be made by the patient, patient’s family, primary care or specialty physician, or acute care hospital. Referrals from acute care hospitals will have an on-site evaluation by our medical care evaluation team. Referrals from the community will have an outpatient evaluation by a rehabilitation physician prior to admission.
