Volunteering at Whittier
Volunteering at any of the Whittier facilities provides the volunteer many opportunities including creating friendships while meeting new people, giving back to their community, and gaining the experience of working in a healthcare setting. Each Whittier facility manages their volunteer program separately and may utilize volunteers in different ways. Please contact the facility that you may be interested in volunteering your time at.
VOLUNTEER PROGRAM:
1) The Whittier skilled nursing facilities focus on assisting the activities programs, which may include the following tasks: • Transporting residents to the activities room • Assisting with crafts, games, movies • Assisting with mail delivery • Providing companionship to a resident
2) The Whittier Rehabilitation Hospitals’ volunteer programs offer a wider range of possibilities, including, but not limited to: • Gift shop clerk • Transporting patients to groups / therapy • Assisting with formalized groups • Shadowing rehab staff, which may include duties of a rehab aide • Peer volunteering • Clerical duties, such as assisting with mailings, filing, making copies and making teaching packets • Assisting with mail delivery • Greeting visitors and providing directions in lobby reception areas
To volunteer within the Whittier network of facilities, you must first: • Complete an orientation session, which will include safety procedures, confidentiality and a general tour of the facility with an explanation of its programs and services. • Schedule an Employee Health visit to be tested for tuberculosis • Submit a medical certification form from your physician (Fit for Duty)
