ORYX Summary: Whittier continues to take patients sooner than the nation and continues to discharge them with higher FIM (TM) scores. Whittier continues to be higher than the nation in all FIM (TM) areas, except cognitive scores. Our discharges continue to be the same as the nation also. GLOSSARY OF TERMS: Average Onset Days: The average number of days between Date of Onset and Admit Date (i.e. the number of days spent in an acute hospital setting prior to transferring to a rehab setting) Average Length of Stay: is calculated excluding the day of discharge in keeping with Medicare practice. FIM(TM): (Functional Independence Measure) is the most widely accepted functional assessment measure in use in the rehabilitation community. The FIM(TM) is an 18-item ordinal scale, used with all diagnoses within a rehabilitation population. It is viewed as most useful for assessment of progress during inpatient rehabilitation. Within the 18 categories, the FIM(TM) score ranges from 1 to 7, with 1 (Total Assistance) being the worst possible score and 7 (Complete Independence) being the best possible score. Total FIM(TM) upon Discharge: This is the combined average score of the FIM(TM) items from the discharge assessment. Total FIM(TM) Change: The average change in total FIM(TM) scores from Admission to Discharge. FIM(TM) Change Per Day: The average of the change in FIM(TM) total from admission to discharge divided by the length of stay. This is calculated by first subtracting total admission FIM(TM) from total discharge FIM(TM) for each assessment. The FIM(TM) change is then divided by LOS for each assessment. The calculated FIM(TM) change per day for each assessment is then averaged over the selected time period. Motor FIM(TM) upon Discharge: This is the combined average score of the motor FIM(TM) items from the Discharge assessment. Motor FIM(TM) Change: The average change in the motor FIM(TM) scores from Admission to Discharge. Cognition Score Change: The average change in the cognitive FIM(TM) scores from Admission to Discharge. Percentage of Patients Discharged to Community: The count of patients whose Discharge Destination was either Home, Room and Board, Transitional Living, Intermediate Care, or Assisted Living Residence. FIM(TM) is a trademark of the Uniform Data System for Medical Rehabilitation, a division of UB Foundation Activities, Inc.
