Stress and Anxiety for Professionals
in Healthcare

How to Care for the Community of Caregivers and Frontline Personnel
by Building Resilience and Professional Heartiness

Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital Westborough invites you to attend a Zoom continuing education presentation:

Thursday April 28, 2022 from 6:30-7:30 pm

Presented by: Michael Sefton, Ph.D.
Director of Psychology and Neuropsychology,
Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital

Healthcare professionals including nurses, doctors, and ancillary therapy staff often wrongly believe they are immune to the impact of stress. The fact is, being exposed to recurring episodes of human suffering, severe illness, and death will take its toll on each of us unless we construct resilience for healthy living. This presentation will offer an overview of the normal stress response at times of heightened pressure at work and home. Stress is unavoidable and often overlooked. Healthcare workers must know the signs of caregiver fatigue and maladaptive coping to avoid emotional languishing and career burn-out.

For career satisfaction and longevity, healthcare workers must learn to thrive in the face of sometimes overwhelming pain and suffering. Professional resilience requires healthy adaptation to the stress brought by a need to balance career growth and family demands. Employers need to understand these facts and work to provide support for staff or risk losing valuable human assets that may never be replaced.

1. What is the effect of stress on human body – normal reactivity.
2. Neurobiology of burn-out.
3. Adaptive ways of managing stress when there is no way of avoiding it.
4. Closure and resilience.
