Oak Knoll Healthcare Center welcomes Sub-Acute Medical Director Dr. Deborah Markowitz.
Oak Knoll Healthcare Center is pleased to announce that Dr. Deborah Markowitz, along with her team of Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners, has joined us as one of our Sub-Acute Medical Directors.
Brook Bearse, Administrator at Oak Knoll said “Dr. Markowitz has worked for many years in acute care settings, providing high quality care. Already having an established presence at Metrowest Medical Center, and most recently joining the medical team at Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital in Westborough, gaining Dr. Markowitz’s presence at Oak Knoll will further develop the continuity of care we strive for. As many of Oak Knoll’s patients come from Metrowest and Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital, Dr. Markowitz and her team will now have the ability to follow patients on their journey from onset of illness or injury to going home safely. That being said, we are very fortunate she is joining us.”
Dr. Deborah Markowitz is a Board Certified Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Physician. She is the Medical Director of the Intensive Care Unit at Leonard Morse Hospital, MetroWest Medical Center, in Natick. After matriculating from Harvard College, she attended New York University School of Medicine. She completed her Medicine Internship and Residency at Mount Auburn Hospital and then her subspecialty training in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Markowitz then spent 9 years as an Assistant Professor at UMass-Memorial Hospital University Campus, attending in the Medical Intensive Care Unit and teaching Medical Residents and Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellows. She wrote several Critical Care Book Chapters and review articles, as well as served as Book Review Editor for the journal CHEST. During that time, she was also Medical Director of the Cardiopulmonary Exercise Laboratory at UMass and Medical Director of a Ventilator Unit at Fairlawn Rehabilitation Hospital.
Dr. Markowitz moved to MetroWest Medical Center in 2004 and continued in the position of Medical Director of the Natick Campus ICU since that time. She served as Chairperson the Medical Records Committee and physician member of the Policy and Procedure Committee. For nine years Dr. Markowitz also served as Medical Director of a Long Term Acute Care Hospital and Chair of the Medical Executive Committee. Currently, Dr. Markowitz is the attending of record in several skilled nursing facilities in the MetroWest area, which allows her to deliver a true continuum of care from the in-patient hospital setting to the post-acute care arena. Her clinical interests are Critical Care Medicine and the continuity to post-acute care in a community rehabilitation setting. She is also certified in wound care. She works closely with Vincent Ludwig, PAC and NaDarron Fort, NP who also provide care in all these venues. Dr. Markowitz is a mother of two daughters, ages 18 and 15 and works with her husband, Dr. Eric Silverman, who is the Chief of Pulmonary and Critical Care Division at MetroWest Medical Center.
As the newly appointed Medical Director of the Subacute Unit in Knoll, Dr. Markowitz is excited to play an integral role in the care of patients and in the management of that specialized unit. It is her hope to care for more complex patients there, while maintaining outstanding medical delivery with family and patient-focused care. Dr. Markowitz, along with the other medical practitioners, nursing and rehabilitation staff and persons from all clinical disciplines will work together to provide coordinated, individualized care for each patient.
