Education has always gone hand-in-hand with the need for clinician contact hours, updated licensure, and nurturing an informed community. At Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital Westborough, educational opportunities go above and beyond the norm, and they’re enormously proud of that fact.

“We started our educational programming back in the early 2000s, and it took off from there,” says Joanne Swiderski, Director of Community Relations & Education at Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital Westborough. Now the primary education provider across the entire Whittier Health Network, Westborough traditionally offers continuing education seminars every month for nurses in need of contact hours.

Even with COVID restrictions, Westborough is still offering virtual training opportunities, not just for Whittier employees but for any medical professional looking to stay current in their CEUs. Recently, Westborough offered a timely webinar to nurses on The Psychological Impact of the Pandemic, presented by Michael Sefton, Ph.D., and Director of Psychology and Neuropsychology.

“The parameters of people attending each training seminar is different but just as important,” Joanne says. “We always need to be asking: What’s the trend in admissions? What’s new in medicine? What patterns are we seeing with patients, and what knowledge can be shared among medical professionals?”

Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital Westborough also has a community education program focused on senior health. Again, with COVID restrictions, in-person health demonstrations can’t happen. Alternatively, a webinar is to be recorded for medical professionals and local senior centers about fall prevention in January and more digital offerings are planned in the New Year.

“It’s important that we stay connected in the community to help people stay healthy,” Joanne adds. “Not just in Westborough, but in all the boroughs—the greater Worcester area, Metro West, everyone. As a medical facility, it’s a natural part of what we should be doing.”
