Aphasia is a language disorder that affects your ability to communicate with others. This diagnosis can cause people to feel isolated and alone, unable to express themselves in the way they once were able to. In this group, the emotional support of navigating Aphasia with other people who have the same diagnosis will be beneficial. The comfort of being near others who understand will allow growth in a safe environment.

At Whittier, patients will meet once a week to engage in various activities. Members will learn life participation skills while having a caring team of speech therapists. These activities will incorporate the skills necessary to do things such as going to a restaurant, making phone calls, and grocery shopping by mimicking functional daily tasks. Participants may use written scripts in preparation for their speech deliverance. Educational games and weekly themes will be part of the fun.

Our Aphasia group meets on Thursday afternoons at 1 pm for one hour, and runs for eight week sessions. If you or a loved one think you may benefit from group therapy, please contact our Outpatient department for more details at (508) 871-2077.

Here is a recent review of Whittier and our Aphasia group:

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟  “I would highly recommend Whittier Rehab to friends and family. My daughter had a stroke recently at thirty years old! One would not consider anything “good” about a stroke, but there have been silver-linings including the experience we are having here on her journey to recovery.

I cannot more highly commend the Whittier staff for designing and implementing the Aphasia Support Group on Thursdays. This impactful resource gives people who struggle with Aphasia a sense of connectedness and a chance to share their unique experiences with others who truly understand. I have seen both laughter and tears that have moved me to write this note. The community you have created for us here at Whittier is priceless and we are very grateful.” —Tammie R.
