Update on Concussion:
What You Need to Know About Lingering Symptoms

Presented by:
Michael Sefton, Ph.D.
Certified Brain Injury Specialist and Neuropsychologist
Director of Psychology, Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital-Westborough.

A concussion may be caused by any force directed upon the head and skull. Falls among older persons is a leading cause of concussion or mild traumatic brain injury. A great deal is known about the long-term impact of concussion and repeated concussions. Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) is a known neurobiological consequence of repeated concussions. Persistent post-concussive symptoms — also called post-concussion syndrome — occurs when symptoms of a mild traumatic brain injury last longer than expected after an injury. These symptoms may include headaches, dizziness, and problems with concentration and memory. They can last weeks to months according to Mayo Clinic 2023. This presentation hopes to bring the audience up to date on recent changes in understanding post-concussion syndrome.
